Call to all CMW community: if you haven't seen 'Loving Vincent' yet, stop everything you're doing and get thee to a HK cinema!
The world's first fully painted animated feature movie, Loving Vincent is a biographical drama film about the life of Vincent van Gogh, and in particular, the circumstances of his death.
The film makers chose to avoid using animators. The results: each of the film's 66,960 frames is an oil painting on canvas; painstakingly created by 125 'very pure oil painters' as Welchman put it, recruited from across the continents, using the same brush technique of Van Gogh.
The storyboard for the project was informed by works Van Gogh had painted, which were then modified for the screen. These ranged from simple alterations to re-imaginings incorporating different weather effects or time of day; or for depicting circumstances retrospectively.
Vincent is another stunning example of the ways that science and art are coming together more and more often in the modern world. At Colour My World, we're super-excited about this trend, because as all trained artists know, taking things apart and studying how they work is a fundamental part of artistic training, and leads to better observation and treatment of form, movement, line-work and enhances spatial understanding - skills that form the bedrock of curiosity and innovation.
This Christmas and New Year, we'll be studying the science of motion, with exciting workshops for ages 4 years and up creating traditional and digital zoetrope animations, learning dance and spinning some exquisite pottery pieces on the wheel.
